CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Abby
Sitting here with my sister, I realize again how much Iâve relied on her over the years and how Iâve changed since we last saw each other. I missed her a lot, though. Itâs why Iâd suggested we sit in the hospitalâs cafeteria. My excuse was so that Mom could rest properly, but itâs more than that. And for the past fifteen minutes, I havenât found a way to broach the main reason for my impromptu visit.
âIâm happy Mom is doing so well,â I say, cradling the can of coke that she got me from the hospitalâs vending machine. âIâm glad Iâm able to come and see her today.â
Beth nods and sits back in her chair with a contented sigh. âIsnât it nice out?â she asks in a mild tone. âNow that things are a little better for us, I can appreciate the scenery like this one every once in a while.â
I look outside the cafeteria's glass walls. I take in the picturesque scenery of the setting sun on the horizon and feel a sense of calm descend over my heart. Itâs indeed beautiful.
I look back at Beth. She indeed looks more relaxed, with her shiny brown hair spilling down her shoulders like mine.
âLife and its ironies,â I say with a small sigh. âA hospital is mostly a place of pain and death, but finding such calming scenery suggests life and hope. Itâs uplifting, I guess.â
She turns toward me with a small smile, her pretty green eyes holding the most serene expression. âFor us, it was one turbulent ride after the other, wasnât it?â
âAnd I was mostly shielded from the tempest, thanks to you and Mom,â I say, hoping she will see the extent of my gratitude.
âBelieve it or not, you had it the hardest,â Beth says with an ironic chuckle. âAnd to us, you are this beautiful scenery. Our hope.â
I lean forward to take her hands in mine. I wait until she raises her eyes to mine to say, âThanks, B. For everything.â
âOh, enough about the mushy stuff,â Beth says with a small laugh. But, despite her attempt at humor, I can see her blinking back tears. âHowâs work?â
âItâs good on most days,â I reply with a small shrug, averting my gaze from hers.
âYour boss sends flowers,â Beth says quietly.
My head snaps up in surprise. âHe does?â
âHe does,â Beth replies, entrapping me with her eyes. I know that look... Itâs the same one she gets every time she figures out one of my secrets. âHe even adds little notes wishing Mom a healthy recovery. So I guess you two are getting along better than I thought.â
âHeâs such a gentleman,â I say, resisting the urge to bite my fingernails.
âHeâs a mobster, Abby,â Beth says in a gentle tone, but I can hear the frustration in her voice.
âHeâs much more than that,â I tell her, hoping she will understand. âHeâs good to me and to others around him too. Heâs good despite the place he comes from. That says a lot, B.
